Founded in early 2025 by Martin Tisne, the organization's goal is not to compete in the commercial space, but rather to establish a shared, open infrastructure that ensures democratic access to AI technologies, free from profit motives and linguistic or geographical barriers.
The Coalition and the $400M War Chest

The French government seeded the initiative with a $100 million grant, joined by global philanthropic organizations such as the Ford Foundation and the MacArthur Foundation, alongside corporate giants like Salesforce and Google DeepMind. "They are not investors; they are funders," Bdeir clarified, emphasizing that this capital does not demand a traditional return on investment but is entirely dedicated to supporting research, open models, and grant-making for global developer communities.
From Offline Devices to Open-Source Chatbots
Current AI’s strategy goes beyond high-level philosophy and is already yielding concrete, localized applications. A prominent example is its collaboration with Bhashini, the Indian government’s AI language division. Together, they developed Suno Sutra ("listening chronicles"), a pocket-sized, offline device capable of running AI in 22 local Indian languages without requiring an internet connection.
This fully open-sourced device was designed to break digital barriers in rural settings where English is not spoken and connectivity is unreliable. Additionally, Current AI recently launched an open-source chatbot at the AI for Good Summit in Geneva and allocated $3.2 million in grants to support public-interest AI projects. The approach aims to prove that AI can—and should—operate outside the multi-billion-dollar proprietary data centers of Big Tech.
A Network Against Corporate Silos
The comparison to the early days of the World Wide Web is deliberate. Before the web, digital networks were fragmented into closed, proprietary silos like AOL or CompuServe. The advent of open protocols and a neutral infrastructure paved the way for the internet we use today.
