As revealed by recent job postings for strategic roles in San Francisco, OpenAI has begun searching for a dedicated Product Manager to build experiences specifically for families, caregivers, and older adults across its suite of products. This move signals a fundamental pivot. ChatGPT is no longer aiming to be just an assistant for developers or copywriters; it is positioning itself to become a technological pillar for managing intergenerational daily life, which will radically alter its interfaces and interaction paradigms.
The Demographics Driving the Shift
OpenAI's decision is not an arbitrary experiment, but a direct response to a demographic transition already taking place among generative AI users. According to estimates by Sensor Tower shared exclusively with TechCrunch, the global share of ChatGPT users aged 35 and older rose to 31% in the second quarter of the year, up from 26% in the same period last year. Conversely, the share of younger users (ages 18 to 24) shrank from 34% to 29%.
Even more striking is the data regarding parents in the United States: nearly one in four smartphone-using parents interacted with ChatGPT during the last quarter, a significant jump from the 16% reported a year ago. This shift demonstrates that AI is transitioning from the niche of tech-savvy early adopters to become integrated into household routines, such as homework help, family scheduling, and leisure planning.
The Trust Challenge and "Safety by Redesign"
Transitioning from an office tool to a domestic appliance requires OpenAI to confront entirely new challenges regarding trust, safety, and privacy. Designing for a family ecosystem means engaging with vulnerable demographics, including children and older adults, who require vastly different protections than those designed for business professionals.
Commenting on the development, Stephen Balkam, Chief Executive of the Family Online Safety Institute, described this approach as a process of "safety by redesign." Rather than applying post-hoc safety filters to a generic model, the user experience must be rebuilt from the ground up with the unique vulnerabilities and needs of different family members in mind. Ben Bajarin, CEO of technology consultancy Creative Strategies, noted that this trajectory mirrors the path Google, Apple, and Meta previously took as their platforms became embedded in daily life. The crucial difference, however, lies in the nature of AI: a generative assistant does not merely organize calendars or curate media—it mediates knowledge itself, dramatically raising the stakes for truthfulness, bias, and ethics.
