Grid capacity overwhelmed by speculative demand
Official state figures highlight an unprecedented surge in power connection requests. In January 2026, ERCOT's interconnection queue stood at 233 gigawatts. In less than six months, that figure more than doubled to a record 474 gigawatts across more than 1,800 project filings. Data center operators account for approximately 90% of those requests.
According to TechCrunch, while many of these filings represent speculative paper proposals submitted early to lock in queue placement, the combined volume presents a major operational risk. Because the ERCOT grid operates independently from neighboring US power grids, even a fraction of these proposed data centers coming online could demand up to five times the current peak capacity record of the state, threatening power reliability for local residents and traditional businesses.
